There are many things, which one should know before opting for low fat diets. Make sure you have complete information.

Did you know diets low in fats could be harmful! There are some other facts that should know if you are opting for a low fat diet.

For good health, some fat is also needed as fat is a source of energy and essential fatty acids. It also helps in the absorption of vitamins A, D, E and K. Any diet low in fat diet may prevent absorption of vitamins that are fat-soluble.

It is also true, as I have heard that cholesterol and high level of saturated fat are responsible for increased blood cholesterol levels. It also poses greater risk of heart disease.

Many Americans are now on diets low in fats. Such diets are low in saturated fats and cholesterol. As a result, heart disease is responsible for fewer deaths today than in the recent past.

Still the number of overweight people has increased as many people mostly teenagers are eating high-fat diets. Consequently, the risk of heart attack and certain cancers has increased many-fold. 

Does that sound confusing? Well, the moot point is that do not deprive your health of fatty foods, but not the high-fat ones. In fact, a diet low in saturated fat is an expressway to powerful health.

Fat derived from animal sources or plants has more than twice the number of calories of an equal amount of carbohydrate or protein. Therefore, you should go for low fat diet that contains 30 percent of total calories from fat.

In choosing a low fat diet, avoid saturated fat as much as you can. Saturated fat is responsible for rise in the cholesterol level.

Olive oil and canola oils are low in saturated fats and high in unsaturated fats. Other sources of unsaturated fats are high-fat fish, vegetable oils, nuts which you can use according your need. These unsaturated are capable of reducing bad cholesterol in the blood.  

As you know, cholesterol is not only present in the food you eat, but also produced by the body. Animal sources such as egg yolk, meat (especially organ meats such as liver), high fat milk products have a high level of dietary cholesterol.

Children should gradually be given a low fat diet after 2 years of age. After about 5 years of age, a meal should not typically contain more than 30 percent of calories from fat.

You can make up for lost calories by having more fruits, grain products, vegetables, and low fat milk products. A decent diet should also contain calcium-rich foods, lean meat, beans, fish, or other protein-rich foods.
